I've been fighting an intermittent hard starting problem for over a year. I finally realized that I only have problems when the fuel level drops below about 1/2 tank, the lower it gets the harder it starts. That got me looking at the pickup tube and fuel lines which all looked fine. I tested the fuel pressure and it was within spec but I decided to replace the electric lift pump anyway. The new pump solved the problem.
It's a pretty common pump found on lots of different machines. Polaris gets over $160 for it, I bought an aftermarket one for under $20.
